That persistent, nagging feeling that you're not good enough, that your accomplishments are down to luck or timing, that any moment now someone will pull back the curtain and expose you as a complete fraud… sound familiar? It’s a heavy burden to carry, especially when you’re pouring your heart and soul into your work. For me, understanding where this feeling came from was a long journey, one that started long before I ever picked up a professional camera….
Read MoreIf you asked me about the biggest mistake I ever made in my photography career, your guess might lean towards a disastrous client shoot, a poor gear investment, or maybe a missed business opportunity. The reality, however, is something far more fundamental, something insidious that crept up while I was busy chasing the dream: I consistently prioritised work over my physical health and training. It’s a mistake that nearly cost me my career and my quality of life, and it’s a cautionary tale I feel compelled to share, especially with fellow photographers and creatives.
Read MoreWe've all been there. You're scrolling through IG late at night, or perhaps falling down a Pinterest rabbit hole, pinning and seeking inspiration. Suddenly, you see it – that shot. A portrait with perfectly sculpted light, a food photo that seems to glow from within, a product shot so crisp it feels three-dimensional. Your first reaction is pure admiration: "WOW! That looks absolutely incredible." But almost immediately, a second, more insidious thought creeps in: "I wonder how they did that? It looks soooo good. I couldn’t do that, not with what I’ve got…"
Read MoreIn our modern narrative of success, we often gravitate towards stories of innate talent, overnight breakthroughs, and seemingly effortless genius. We celebrate the finish line, the polished final product, the dazzling results. But in doing so we frequently overlook the single most critical, yet least glamorous, ingredient required to achieve anything truly meaningful: persistence. It's the quiet engine driving progress, the unwavering commitment through the messy middle, the sheer tenacity to keep going when enthusiasm wanes and results seem distant. My own understanding of this crucial quality wasn't gleaned from a business seminar or a self-help book, but from an unexpected interaction in the chaotic, paint-splattered environment of a high school art class nearly two decades ago.
Read MoreThere’s a common hurdle in the journey of many photographers, a point where progress seems to hit a wall guarded by intimidating technology. For me, and perhaps for you too, that hurdle often takes the form of artificial lighting. Flashes, strobes, modifiers… they loom large, not just in our camera bags (or potential shopping carts), but in our minds. I remember vividly when I first truly confronted this. Flashes seemed inherently scary.

Right. Manual mode. Okay. What affects exposure? ISO. Shutter speed. Aperture. My ISO was probably still set high from a previous shoot, maybe 400. Click. Lowered it to 100. That helped, but it was still too bright. Okay, aperture. I was probably wide open at f/4 or something. Click. Closed it down a stop or two, maybe to f/5.6 or f/8.
Took another shot. Click. Looked at the screen. Perfect.”
Read MoreIt happens to all of us creatives, doesn't it? That occasional, almost archaeological dig into the digital depths of our hard drives. Maybe you're searching for a specific file, maybe you're just procrastinating on a current project, or perhaps, like me recently, you're simply struck by a wave of curiosity about where you've come from. I found myself scrolling through folders labelled "2018," "2019," and "2020," and suddenly, I was transported back 5, 6, even 7 years. Seeing these images again, birthed in a different phase of my creative journey, was… well, it was a mix of feelings. Nostalgia, certainly. A little surprise ("Did I really shoot that?"). And yes, admittedly, a healthy dose of professional cringe.
Read MoreWe often think that elevating our creative work, especially in a field like photography, requires hefty investments in high-end gear. Expensive lenses, sophisticated lighting rigs, fancy props – the wish list can seem endless. But sometimes, the most transformative tools are hiding in plain sight, waiting in the most unexpected places. For me, one such revelation came not from a camera store catalogue, but from the brightly lit aisles of my local Bunnings hardware store.
