What's In My Kit? Argentinian Food Photoshoot
Mixing Ambient Light, Strobe, and Continuous Light for High-End Lifestyle Food Photography
This recent shoot, set in an airy outdoor/indoor venue, highlights a complex but highly effective strategy for high-end commercial photography: mastering the blend of ambient light, continuous light, and strobe. Our goal was to create images that felt natural and vibrant, suitable for both lifestyle and dedicated food documentation.
Gear & Setup:
Camera & Lens: Canon R5 with RF 24-105mm F4 lens.

Tripod 1 (Main): Manfrotto MT055CXPRO4 Carbon Fiber Tripod.
Tripod 2 (Overhead/Angles): Sirui W-2204 Tripod with HA-77 Horizontal Arm.
Background: Mistral "Venus" Backdrop from Club Backdrops.
Camera Settings (for food shot):
Aperture: $f/10$.
Shutter Speed: $1/100$.
ISO: 200.
Temperature (White Balance): 5000K.
The Versatile Lighting Strategy
We utilised Profoto light fixtures, equipped with the OCF Magnum Reflector, which is crucial for maximising light output and focusing the beam while keeping the setup portable.
Strobe Light for Ambiance (Profoto D30): For the lifestyle shots featuring the diners, we employed the Profoto D30. This strobe light source allowed us to easily balance with the ambient light of the outdoor venue without the complex timing of a flash. The D30, when paired with the OCF Magnum Reflector, provided a strong, directional wash of light, mimicking a powerful overhead sun or a specific point-source studio light, adding dimension and sparkle to the scene.
Achieving Detail with Precision Settings
The camera settings chosen for the food shot demonstrate a clear focus on maximum detail and colour accuracy. By stopping the aperture down to f/10, we ensured a large depth of field, keeping the entire food platter sharp and in focus, from the foreground garnishes to the background elements. The low ISO 200 guarantees minimal noise, while a conservative 1/100 Shutter Speed is fast enough for handheld shooting (if needed) but is mainly used here to control the exposure of the ambient light, allowing the powerful strobe to dominate the exposure. Finally, the 5000K Temperature is a neutral, daylight-balanced setting, crucial for rendering food colors accurately without excessive warm or cool shifts.
Creative Angles and Backgrounds
To tackle the challenging angles required for top-down food photography, we relied on a robust tripod setup: the Sirui W-2204 Tripod paired with the HA-77 Horizontal Arm. This configuration allows the heavy Canon R5 with the RF 24-105mm F4 lens to be safely extended directly over the subject, eliminating the photographer's shadow and capturing that popular flat-lay perspective. The choice of the Mistral "Venus" Backdrop from Club Backdrops provided a beautiful, gradient color field that added vibrancy and visual interest beneath the food, making the entire composition pop without distracting from the main subject.
Behind the Scenes: Crafting the Perfect Shot
Taking a visually stunning food and lifestyle photograph requires more than just a good eye, it demands professional-grade equipment and meticulous setup. In our 'Behind the Scenes' image, you can see the high-power tools we used to create that vibrant, appetising final shot. Our key light source was the Profoto D30 with an OCF Magnum Reflector, positioned on the left to provide a powerful, directional light that perfectly highlights the subjects and the incredible food spread. This setup ensures that the colours pop and the textures are rendered beautifully. The camera capturing the moment was a Canon R5, paired with the versatile RF 24-105mm F4 lens, giving us the clarity and flexibility needed to capture the scene, from wide shots of the environment to tight close-ups of the dishes.
Stability and Precision: The Importance of Support
Even the best lighting and camera gear rely on a rock-solid foundation. A professional tripod is crucial for food and beverage photography, as it allows for precise, repeatable framing and keeps the camera perfectly steady during long exposures or when working with flash sync. This stability is what gives the final images their crisp, professional look. The combination of industry-leading lighting, a high-resolution camera, and stable support ensures every detail, from the vibrant garnish on a cocktail to the subtle char on the meat, is captured with maximum impact.
The Final Result: Flavour and Fellowship
All that effort in the setup culminates in a delicious result! Our final photo captures more than just a meal; it captures a moment of genuine connection and enjoyment. The two subjects are sharing a laugh over a table laden with fresh, colourful Argentinian-inspired fare—sandwiches, hot dogs, and vibrant bowls of salsa criolla. The lighting setup we carefully built ensures that every dish looks as mouthwatering as it tastes, with rich, appetising colours and perfect texture. The close-up montage at the bottom highlights the artistry of the beverages, from a bright margarita garnished with a dehydrated orange slice to a spicy, vibrant cocktail accented with a chilli pepper. This final image beautifully merges professional photography with the simple joy of sharing great food and company.
